As the World Cup heads back to North America in 2026, stadiums across the U.S. must meet top international standards—including replacing artificial turf with natural grass. In Atlanta, that challenge is being met with the use of high-quality HDPE piping and dependable McElroy fusion machines to transform one of the city’s largest stadiums on a tight timeline.
Their mission was to build a reliable irrigation system that would keep the natural grass pitch healthy and ready for the world stage. They used McElroy’s Pit Bull 26 and Pit Bull 28 fusion machines for most of the work. These compact machines are designed for use in tight spaces and are perfect for small- to medium-diameter pipe fusion. In just two weeks, they completed around 75 butt fusions using McElroy fusion machines and more than 1,300 feet of HDPE pipe.
The requirements for the World Cup were strict. FIFA mandates that every sprinkler head on the field must be controlled independently. This meant installing significantly more piping than what’s found in a typical U.S. field. HDPE pipe was the smart choice. It’s strong, durable, and doesn’t need glue or thrust blocks, making it a superior option for high-pressure, high-volume irrigation systems.
As the world turns its attention to the 2026 World Cup, McElroy fusion machines will be working behind the scenes to ensure the pitches are as ready as the players.
